ARCHITECTURE.
Educational Requirements:
To practice as an architect in Canada, you must be a registered member of an Association of Architects in one of the provinces, or territories. This means that you have either completed a degree in architecture from a university program accredited by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB), or have completed an apprenticeship through the Syllabus Program offered by the Royal Achitecture Institute of Canada (RAIC).
Requirements:
-
Edudation: The first step is to complete the educational requirements; this may take anywhere between five to seven years depending on the route chosen..There are degrees existent both at the Bachelor's level (B.Arch), the first four years out of high school, and at the Masters level (M.Arch), for which entrance is granted only after an undergraduate has been completed across the country. However, to become a registered architect in Canada, you must complete a professional degree in architecture at the Masters level.
-
Experience: To facilitate the transition between the completion of the educational requirements and architectural registration, the completion of the Internship in Architecture Program (IAP) is mandatory. This ensures that all aspiring architects gain enough real world experience to be able to discern and master all practical skills and knowledge about the work field. The internship lasts approximate 2.5-3 years in which the intern architects must complete 5600 hours of work experience in specified areas of srchitectural practices. All completed hours must be logged in the Canadian Experience Record BOOk (CERB) and must be validated by the registered architect under which you are an intern, and by a mentor, another registered architect separate from your employer.
-
Examinations: The final step to becoming a regustered architect is taking, and passing the computerized exam testing all the basic skills, and knowledge acquired throughout your educational phase, as well as your internship. The Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC) is a new exam under development as a replacement for the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).

"The process of becoming a registered architect is a really long haul. I've completed my education with an undergrad in Urban Planning here at the U of S, and then had to take a year off due to the sheer amount of work I knew was ahead of me. I then moved to Calgary to pursue the M.Arch program at the University of Calgary in order to graduate with a professional degree, and I'm not going to lie to you, those were really tough and stressful years for me. Although at the time I didn't understand why I needed to take some of the classes that I did in university, I've come to realize working at this firm that I do utilize the skills and knowledge I gained. I am currently working on completing my hours for my internship here at Kindrachuk Agrey.
At the end of the day, I can for sure say that I made the right decision with my career choice.
